The MLB trading deadline for 2025 will come and go soon. At 6:01 pm EST on Thursday, the deadline will be in the past. As I write this, it is 32 hours away!
I’m hoping Texas adds a bullpen arm while staying below the Luxury Tax. I absolutely HATE the Luxury Tax, but it is the rule, and the Rangers will have a lot of available money to spend this offseason, if and ONLY IF they stay under the Luxury Tax.
While reporting isn’t exact on this, it is widely believed the Rangers have about $5M to add this season to remain under that threshold. Here are the arms many consider available over the next 24 hours, their contract status & my thoughts regarding their potential for Texas: Jhoan Duran, Twins $4.1M Arbitration Eligible
Elite Arm! Would love him! If traded, it will return a haul, a haul Texas is unlikely to deal away.
Griffin Jax, Twins $2.4M Arbitration Eligible
3.91 ERA in 2025. Could be a target. Has been elite, this year not so much
David Bednar, Pirates $5.9M Arbitration Eligible
Too expensive. It will bring back a lot for Pittsburgh. I can’t see him landing here.
Ryan Helsley, Cardinals $8.2M Rental Free Agent
Someone will give them more than Texas has to deal with
Pete Fairbanks, Rays $3.8M $1M buyout Arbitration Eligible
Remember Nick Solak? No? Well, Texas had Fairbanks and flipped him for Solak. Oops. Love Fairbanks! Would love him back in Texas!! Could happen
Reid Detmers, Angels $1.8M 3 years of arbitration
If I could have any one arm at the deadline, it’s Detmers! Elite Arm is having its best year! Heck, just Tuesday evening, he looked SPECTACULAR against Texas! Picked at #10 in the 1st round of the draft just a few years back in 2020, threw a no-hitter in 2022 & almost threw a 2nd no-no in Arlington against the Rangers!
Now in the bullpen, and he is AWESOME! Might be hard to pay the price Anaheim would want back…might be hard to get them to trade him in division….might be hard to get them to trade him away at all. If I were them, I sure wouldn’t!
Carlos Estevez, Royals $11M this year and next
Really good, really expensive, really not getting traded here or anywhere
Jake Bird, Rockies, less than $800, 3 years of arbitration control
It might be the most likely pickup, and I would love it! Has been giving up some runs lately, which is scary but might lower the price.
Dennis Santana, Pirates $1.4M One year of arbitration control
1.36 ERA in 46 innings??? YES PLEASE! It might cost more prospects than Texas is willing to deal! But it would be a SPECTACULAR ADD!
In short, Detmers, Bird, or Sanatana would all be AWESOME ADDS!
I don’t see the Rangers having a ton of prospect capital to offer, and that Luxury Tax Threshold is killing my hopes, but in Chris Young I Trust!
Let’s see what baseball magic he can use to bring us some help down the stretch!
Also, there’s been a lot of talk about adding a bat. I say no. Jake Burger will be back soon. Freeman is raking in the minors. Go get an arm… or two.
