A Salary Cap in baseball would be even worse! So many fans are either being fooled or simply want to believe that players are paid too much. I find it pretty maddening, honestly. So, here we go!
If Major League Baseball teams aren’t making money, and all the reporting that comes out is they are insanely profitable, then why do teams try so hard to not allow the financial details to be made public?
I’ll be honest. It’s shocking to me to hear people state/believe that teams aren’t profitable. Teams are very very profitable.
And I have no problem at all with them making tons of money. I simply think the teams should be allowed to pay players what teams wish to pay them. Making rules to lower salaries to some how help the Miami Marlins or Chicago White Sox or the Pittsburgh Pirates or the Philadelphia Oakland Sacramento Las Vegas Athletics seems dumb to me.
And it clearly does not help those teams compete. Just take a look at the
standings for any of the past ten seasons. Now, lets see what others have to say on the matter. I love X. You can follow me over there @jeffbatesonX.
X has its own AI….called Grok. And I love it. So I asked it…Are major league baseball teams profitable? Here is some of what it said:

Ok, maybe you don’t like Elon Musk and want to see what Google has to say. OK, here you go:

Maybe AI just isn’t your thing. Thats fine. Lets go to some MLB reporters. Jeff Passan has been pretty blunt about it. Per Passan, the Braves made $6 Million per game in 2021! PER GAME!

Or maybe you prefer Bob Nightengale.

As of today, February 20th, 2025, the Miami Marlins have a payroll of $79.8M. They must hit a payroll of $105M to avoid a potential grievance from the MLBPA. This is because the are mandated to spend 150% of the revenue sharing collected. Yet they wait…and wait…and wait. They are not even pretending to attempt to put a competitive team on the field for ther fans.

That is pathetic!
They need to find an ownership group that loves Miami and has money to spend. How hard can that possibly be? After the 2026 season the owners will almost assuredly lock out the players and try to get the players to agree with a Salary Cap.
My question is, without the owners opening their books, why do so many fans take the owners side on this? Is it just simply the players get paid too much in so many people’s opinion?
