The first weekend of the NCAA Baseball Tournament is in the books, and one Texas team remains standing.

Five Texas programs entered regional play hoping to take the next step toward Omaha. By the end of the weekend, Texas emerged as the lone survivor, winning the Austin Regional and advancing to the Super Regionals. Meanwhile, Texas A&M, Texas State, Tarleton State, and Southland Conference champion Lamar all saw their seasons come to an end.

Texas Dominates Austin Regional

The Longhorns left little doubt throughout the weekend.

Texas opened regional play with a 19-1 victory over Holy Cross before rolling past Tarleton State 16-2 in the winners’ bracket.

Facing UC Santa Barbara in the regional championship game, Texas completed the job with a 6-4 victory to claim the Austin Regional title.

The Longhorns outscored opponents 41-7 during the weekend and never faced an elimination game. The dominant performance sends Texas to the Super Regionals and keeps its hopes of Omaha alive.

Texas A&M Falls Short at Home

The College Station Regional started well for Texas A&M.

The Aggies opened with a 7-5 win over Lamar before overpowering Texas State 17-2 to move within one victory of advancing.

However, Southern California caught fire at the right time.

USC defeated Texas State 15-4 before stunning Texas A&M 14-3 to force a winner-take-all rematch. On Monday, the Trojans completed the upset with a 7-1 victory, eliminating the Aggies on their home field.

Regional host Texas A&M opened postseason play with high expectations as a national seed, but could not overcome a late push from USC.

Bobcats Turn Heads in Regional Play

A strong postseason run highlighted Texas State’s appearance in the College Station Regional, where the Bobcats quickly proved they belonged among the field.

The Bobcats knocked off Southern California 5-4 in their opening game, putting themselves in position to make a run at the regional title. Unfortunately, losses to Texas A&M and USC ended their season.

Despite the early exit, Texas State continued one of the strongest seasons in program history and proved it belonged on the national stage.

Tarleton Earns First NCAA Tournament Win

Tarleton State made the most of its first NCAA Tournament appearance as a Division I program.

The Texans opened the Austin Regional with an impressive 11-5 victory over UC Santa Barbara, earning the program’s first NCAA Tournament win.

Tarleton eventually fell to Texas and UC Santa Barbara, but the program’s historic breakthrough highlighted another major step forward for the rapidly rising WAC champions.

Lamar Captures Southland Title

Lamar entered the postseason as one of the hottest teams in Texas after winning the Southland Conference Tournament.

The Cardinals drew a difficult regional assignment and opened with a competitive 7-5 loss to Texas A&M. Lamar’s season ended with a loss to Southern California, but the Cardinals capped a memorable year with a conference tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

Regional Weekend Takeaways

Several themes emerged from regional play across Texas:

  • Texas looked every bit like a national title contender.
  • Southern California was the surprise team of the weekend.
  • Texas A&M’s early exit was one of the biggest upsets in the tournament.
  • Tarleton State earned a historic first NCAA Tournament victory.
  • Texas State and Lamar represented their conferences well despite falling short.

Looking Ahead

With regional play complete, Texas carries the state’s hopes into the Super Regional round.

The Longhorns will continue their pursuit of a trip to Omaha and will face Oregon in the Super Regionals, while the rest of the Texas field shifts its focus toward building for 2027.

One weekend down. The Road to Omaha continues.
