Houston Astros Make Five Selections in the Rule 5 Draft
December 11, 2024 – The Houston Astros had an exciting day at the Rule 5 Draft, making five additions to their roster during the minor league portion. The team selected right-handed pitchers Julio Rodriguez, Jean Pinto, and Anderson Bido, along with shortstop Jack Blomgren and left-handed pitcher Nick Swiney. Even better news? The Astros didn’t lose any players in either the draft’s Major League or minor league phases.
Here’s a closer look at the newest members of the Astros organization:
Julio Rodriguez, RHP (Age: 24)
Hailing from the Giants’ system, Rodriguez had a stellar 2024 season, finishing 5-0 with a 3.48 ERA across 54.1 innings in 38 relief appearances. He showcased his talent at three levels, including Class A Eugene (24 games), Double-A (12 games), and even two games at Triple-A. The Cuban native has been with the Giants organization since 2018 and is ready to bring his dynamic pitching to Houston.
Jean Pinto, RHP (Age: 23)
Pinto shined in the Orioles’ system, delivering a 3.10 ERA over 81.1 innings in 2024. Splitting time between Class A and Double-A Bowie, he struck out an impressive 101 batters and held opponents to a .229 batting average. Originally signed by the Angels out of Venezuela in 2019, Pinto has spent the last three seasons developing his craft in Baltimore’s system.
Anderson Bido, RHP (Age: 25)
Bido was selected from the Rockies organization and had a solid season, posting a combined 3.29 ERA over 38.1 innings in 25 appearances. He wrapped up his 2024 campaign in Double-A Hartford, where he dazzled with a 2.82 ERA across 22.1 innings. A Dominican Republic native, Bido began his career as an international free agent signing by the Rockies in 2017.
Jack Blomgren, SS (Age: 26)
Blomgren adds versatility and offensive spark to the Astros’ lineup. He hit .279 with ten extra-base hits and a .829 OPS in 34 games for the Rockies’ Class A affiliate, Spokane. Drafted in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB Draft, Blomgren has proven himself as a reliable middle infielder with a solid bat.
Nick Swiney, LHP (Age: 25)
Swiney spent his 2024 season at Double-A Richmond in the Giants organization, where he tallied a 4-2 record and a 5.25 ERA across 72 innings in 41 appearances, including two starts. A former second-round compensatory pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, Swiney was selected 67th overall out of NC State, bringing potential as a left-handed arm in Houston’s system.
The Astros are eager to see how these promising players develop in their system, bolstering their depth and setting the stage for future success!

Jose Altuve
Altuve secured his third career All-MLB honor, having previously earned First-Team recognition in 2022 and Second-Team honors in 2019. This season, he posted a .295 batting average with 185 hits, 94 runs, 31 doubles, 20 home runs, 65 RBIs, and 22 stolen bases over 153 games. His .790 OPS (.350 OBP, .439 SLG) led all AL second basemen in batting average, hits, doubles, on-base percentage, and slugging, while he ranked second in home runs and RBIs. Altuve’s stellar performance also earned him a spot in his ninth All-Star Game this season and his seventh career Silver Slugger Award, tying him with Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg for the most Silver Sluggers by a second baseman in MLB history.
Yordan Alvarez
Alvarez celebrated his fifth All-MLB selection, all as a Second-Team honoree (2019, 2021-2024). Over 147 games, he batted .308 with 170 hits, 88 runs, 34 doubles, two triples, 35 home runs, and 86 RBIs while maintaining a .959 OPS (.392 OBP, .567 SLG). Among AL designated hitters, Alvarez led in doubles, batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging while ranking third in home runs and fourth in RBIs. He was also chosen for his third career All-Star Game this year.
Framber Valdez
For Valdez, this year marks his second career All-MLB selection, following a First-Team nod in 2022. The 30-year-old left-hander delivered a 2.91 ERA over 176.1 innings in 28 starts, recording 169 strikeouts, a .221 opponent batting average, and a 1.11 WHIP. He excelled among AL starters, leading in ground-ball percentage (60.8%), ranking third in ERA, and finishing in the top 10 in opponent OPS (.610), batting average, and WHIP. His final 17 starts were particularly dominant, as he posted a 2.24 ERA and held hitters to a .198 batting average. After August 1, Valdez’s 1.65 ERA and .161 opponent batting average ranked second in the AL during that stretch.
Jose Altuve Wins Seventh Silver Slugger Award
November 12, 2024 – Astros second baseman Jose Altuve has claimed his seventh career American League Silver Slugger Award, as announced on MLB Network’s Silver Slugger Award show. This award solidifies Altuve’s standing as one of baseball’s greatest offensive second basemen.
With seven Silver Sluggers, Altuve now holds the record for the most by an AL second baseman and is tied with Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg for the most among all second basemen in MLB history. Sandberg earned his seven awards with the Chicago Cubs in the National League, while Altuve’s awards are the highest count for any Astros player in any position.
At 34, Altuve’s performance in the 2024 season showcased his offensive skill, batting .295 with 185 hits, 94 runs, 31 doubles, 20 home runs, 65 RBIs, 22 stolen bases, and a .790 OPS over 153 games.
