SATURDAY — The Houston Astros pitching staff continued to dominate this season with yet another historic night, no-hitting the New York Yankees in a 3-0 victory to take the series lead two games to one. The no-hitter was the 14th in Astros history and second against the Yankees.
Pitcher Cristian Javier started the historic outing and was able to fend off the Bronx bombers for seven innings giving up just one walk and striking out 13 in the process, a career-high. “I feel really happy, really proud right now for this moment that God has given me,” Javier said after the game.
Entering the eighth inning, Astros manager Dusty Bake put the ball in reliever Hector Neris‘s hands. Neris has been good all season and was once again as he kept the bid for a no-hitter alive despite giving up two walks.
Perhaps the most questionable move made by Baker on Saturday was turning to closer Ryan Pressly to finish the game. Pressly entered the game a day removed from his horrible performance in the game prior, in which he allowed the Yankees to tie the game in the ninth and eventually walk it off.
Pressly bounced back and closed the door on the Yankees, striking out two in the process and completing the no-hitter. “To do it in New York, it’s the best feeling in the world.”, said Pressly during a post-game interview.
The no-hitter was just the second no-hitter against the Yankees since 1958, and coincidentally the Astros were the team to do it both times in 2003 and 2022.
This series was perhaps the series of the year and will be a must-watch should these teams meet again come October.
